Pandey, Pande, or Panday (Hindi: पाण्डेय/पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) (Nepali: पाण्डे/पाँडे/पाण्डेय) is a surname which has its roots in Sanskrit.[citation needed]

India

Majority of Pandey in India are classified under Brahmin varna[1], however nowadays surname can be found in OBC other backward caste, surname is mainly found in people residing in various north Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Maharashtra, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka. They used to have the knowledge of one of the four vedas mainly Atharva Veda.

Nepal

The Priestly class of Pandey surname / or family name is supposed to be found among the Chhetri Kshatriyas communities of Nepal; Pande dynasty of Nepal were the Kshatriyas Chhetri aristocratic family who dominated the Nepalese administration and military up until the 19th century as Mulkaji and Mukhtiyar.[citation needed]
